I heard an interview of the candidates on NPR one morning, there was a lot of garbage - photoshopping the conservative candidate with Hitler, stuff like that.

I guess it worked.

In European politics the far right parties are considered to be neo-Nazis whether justified or not. In some cases it is. In the wave of nationalism we see in Europe today that charge is being made against anyone who opposes unfettered immigration- the largest issue in Europe, with the EU being a close second issue.

The presidential election, you mean? Alexander Van der Bellen (technically Independent, but really a member of the Greens) won with about 54% of the vote. Norbert Hofer of the right-wing FPO got just 46%. Roughly a 300k vote difference.
