Democrats were silent on Thursday as Tulsi Gabbard, one of the party’s sitting lawmakers in Congress, announced that she had met with Bashar al-Assad during a trip to war-torn Syria and dismissed his entire opposition as “terrorists”.

Gabbard, a Democratic congresswoman from Hawaii, disclosed her meeting with the Syrian president on Wednesday, during what her office called a “fact-finding” mission in the region.

“Initially I hadn’t planned on meeting him,” Gabbard told CNN’s Jake Tapper. “When the opportunity arose to meet with him, I did so, because I felt it’s important that if we profess to truly care about the Syrian people, about their suffering, then we’ve got to be able to meet with anyone that we need to if there is a possibility that we could achieve peace. And that’s exactly what we talked about.”

Democratic leaders were mum on the decision by one of their sitting lawmakers to meet with a dictator whom the US government has dubbed a war criminal for his use of chemical weapons against civilians.

I have seen that. And for a long time I have been warning that the concept of the moderate rebels in Syria was largely a myth. They are mostly Jihadists. Some are ISIL or support ISIL. Others are an al Qaeda front group or support al Qaeda. The only good thing is that these two groups don't get along, sometimes fight one another, and always compete for the same pool of troglodytes.

Back when the US was considering intervening in Syria, McCain went there on a "fact finding" mission. The old fool ended up in a photo-op with ISIL's minister of propaganda in front of a building flying the black flag of ISIL.

I'm no so sure. He's not a good guy in all of this. Of course, I don't think there are any good guys.

Read up on him, his history and education and see what religious minorities of Syria think of him.

Assad may not be a good guy, but he is the best option in Syria for Syria.

Most in Syria are drawn to Assad as he is seen at this time as representing Syria!

Terrorist or not , they are not staple enough or human rights oriented enough to support. No such faction exist in Syria. Which is why all our efforts will fail

As an aside, what rank is required for a public official to go meddling n a proverbial "fact finding mission" I'm pretty sure if several members of pther country's legislators were up in our business all the time.
